Superpowers Plugin Beats Claude's /plan Mode

Claude Code's /plan mode hands you a plan after one prompt. Superpowers asks questions first and won't let you write code until you approve a spec.

I stopped using Claude Code’s built-in /plan mode because it starts planning before it has asked enough questions. I use the Superpowers plugin instead.

What /plan mode misses

Ask /plan mode to plan a feature and it hands you a plan. One prompt in, a plan out. If your first description of the problem had a gap in it, that gap is baked into the plan too, and you won’t notice until you’re implementing it.

What Superpowers does differently

Superpowers is a Claude Code plugin built from skill files. I use its brainstorming skill for two reasons.

First, it asks one question at a time instead of guessing at everything up front. A wrong assumption gets caught on the second question, not three files into implementation.

Second, it won’t let the AI touch code until you’ve approved a written spec. I ran this guide through that process before writing it: who’s it for, which example should it use, and what should the installation section cover? The questions take time up front and save rewrites later.

Installing the Superpowers plugin

It ships from Claude Code’s own default plugin marketplace, so there’s no marketplace to add first.

/plugin install superpowers@claude-plugins-official

Run /reload-plugin once it’s done installing and you’re set, no need to restart the whole session.

It kicks in on its own once it detects you’re trying to build something, asking clarifying questions instead of handing you a plan right away. If it doesn’t, you can call it directly with /brainstorming.

Build your own for QA work

Underneath the plugin, Superpowers is a collection of instructions and checklists. You can read the files and see the process it asks Claude to follow.

QA work has repeatable processes too. You can turn bug triage, test planning, or regression selection into a skill with its own steps and checks. You already know the work. Writing it down gives the AI a process to follow.

Some of the best AI users I’ve seen get useful results by asking better questions before the AI starts. This plugin makes those questions part of the workflow.
